Dear house:
I have made a door-draft-blocker. I have put plastic on all of the windows that are not covered with thick, homemade curtains (and some that are). I have the ceiling fan on. I have the heat on. Why the hell are you not warm? What else do you want from me? I am doing my damndest. Stop being so drafty, and heat-sink-y! It sucks, and I hate the cold! And when you make it cold, I HATE YOU TOO.
Love, your soon to be moving to bermuda or something tenant
PS, you suck. |

I only have one midterm left.
I'm hoping my strategy of skipping every class and treating this like a distance-learning experience will pay off once more.
Because DAMMIT IT IS TIME FOR CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES, NOT THIS STUDYING NONSENSE |

So I went to Blockbuster and as I went to swipe my card, there was a handwritten sign saying:
[sic] Pen-is broken. Use finger instead.
I laughed my ass off, because I am a twelve year old boy, and in doing so royally confused the cashier, who was obviously not the person who tried to avoid the "penis is broken" joke with the well placed dash.
Aaaand that made my night super entertaining. |

| Heavily Edited Poem! |
[Nov. 16th, 2009|11:18 am] |
Ok, here is version two of that last poem I wrote, which has been rewritten with the help of some truly excellent pointers from Mara. :)
I like this version much better. I may do some minor tweaking - and to that end, please comment if there are any adjustments you would make - but on the whole I think it stands up fairly well.

anyone have a good idea for a halloween costume? currently leaning towards the high priestess from the Rider-Waite tarot deck, mostly because I have a white dress and blue shawl somewhere. |

Well, first excruciating round of midterms done and more or less passed. YAY! I think I may skip school tomorrow in celebration. (Whatever, I need a day to decompress).
Sister is in town for fall break (wish I had one of those!) and we're hopefully gonna do some fun stuff, see some movies, etc. She has lost almost 60 lbs and is making me look bad. Gotta hit that elliptical again. Course, I already knew that...
Also? Can't quite decide which is worse, paying mucho dinero for heat or being cold. I really hate being cold, but I'm also feeling poor right now (just paid my car insurance. urgh),
Incidentally, we went to dinner tonight at a great japanese fusion sort of place, which was very great. I had a Godzilla roll which was a maki with tempura shrimp, avocado, and cucumber inside, topped with eel, strawberry, and a dab of wasabi aoli and sriracha. I was a little leery of the strawberry, but it was so very hit! As opposed to the wasabi-key-lime-goat-cheese-cheesecake-with-raspberry-ginger-sauce which was a) trying way too hard, b) a little too busy and c) not a great use of wasabi. A bit of a miss. Dad on the other hand got a yuzu ginger creme brulee which was a revelation. I love dinners out (where dad pays). Soon as I get a job though I suspect I'm gonna have to pay for dinners for the rest of my life, but then again, that's only fair.
I'm working on making curtains right now. I'm about 30% done, but it's good to begin to finish this project (if that makes sense) and also have some heat-saving curtains. Which look pretty good for an amateur job if I do say so.
Ok, back to the space-heated room for me! |

So I haven't posted in a while. That was my bad. I did many cool things since the last time I posted, including going to vermont for a kickass wedding (which was so great), cooking some rela-tasty stuff (mostly on fb now since I haven't cross-posted in a while), taking two midterms, going from being enthused about school to doing the cutting-classes-and-resenting-everyone thing, and posting a couple things on Etsy. More recently, attending a highschool friend's gallery opening (awesome), seeing the Jim Henson exhibit (less awesome than I'd hoped, especially since the boys all bailed on me), and going to the MD Renn Fest (AWESOME, and the caps lock is due to seeing all those college folk I've missed so gosh-darned much. And also buying a nifty feather fascinator in turquoise which is, yanno, totally authentic to the period, and also observing the food-marvel that is corn on a cob on a stick, or as Hack and/or Slash put it, food twice removed from itself)
Well.
( Kind of a downer )
I had a generally pleasant dream last night, though, which I will recount for your edification and delight. Much of it stems from fairly obvious recent sources, as most dreams do, but the aggregate was a lovely experience, from which I was rudely awakened by the merciless ring of my alarm.
( Half nifty, half bummer )
Side note: at the gallery opening we met up with a lady whose son was blue eyed and blonde, which wouldn't have been unusual except that the father was brown haired and brown eyed, and the mother is half chinese. Matt - Josh's brother who is basically Josh 6 years ago in almost every way in a really bizarre twist of fate - asked the mother, "Are you sure he's yours?" in complete sincerity.

| Another poem. This time (gasp!) a happy one! |

Feedback would be appreciated. I like the middle but I think the beginning and end are a little clunky and need to be polished, only I'm not quite sure how, so pipe up if you have a suggestion! :)
Strawberries
Me, ankle deep in slick mud Rescuing the last strawberries From the too-soon end of early summer; From melting ingloriously Into over-swollen globs from too much rain Forecast: unceasing drizzle, indefinitely
I would not have been there, Contorted, umbrella wedged between neck and shoulder Bending to peer between matte green leaves and black plastic But I had spent weeks anticipating the too-short harvest Lusting over their jewel-like red flesh Their Willendorf hips and maiden thighs Which yield under my teeth with less protest Than the slick, red vinyl of cherries; Seeds like stars flung net-like over the earth Placed carefully at the apices of diamonds
You, emerging from the distance Hazy and anonymous at first Like a fortune wrung from twice-boiled tea leaves Resolving, as you approach, into warm companionship: That for which I would have traded all of my painstakingly gathered treasures. But! O, fortunate one! Today I may have both; and despite the oppressive rain Today is a good day. |

A flight of lemonades: These were all prepared the same way, by pulsing the magic ingredients with lemon juice and a little bit of simple syrup in a food processor and then straining it into a glass and topping with seltzer (and adding more lemon juice and or sugar syrup as needed). On the left, mint and lavender. Middle is rose petal (the red one you see below the glasses). Right hand is basil, the actual best one so far. They were all actually really fantastic!
Not pictured: Delightful squash casserole with pattipan and regular yellow squash, seared with scallions, rosemary, garlic, deglazed with white wine and tossed with goat cheese. Everything but the goat cheese was CSA and man it was good.

So there I am, reading my Fark stories as per usual, and I click on one about allergens in baby soap products. The picture is of a baby in a bath. The first thought to pop into my head upon looking at this picture ? "I love babies!!" and yes, there were two exclamation points. Yikes. With programming like that, it's no wonder my aunts have between 4 and 7 children on average. |

Point 1: I LOVE discovering that the red 100% silk vintage jacket I bought for $40 and altered for $20 cost $315 back in the day. aaaawesome.
Recipe from Friend-of-family for delicious salad dressing: Pulse 1 c sugar, 1/2 c cider vinegar, 1T minced onion, 1/2 t worcestershire sauce, and 1/4t salt in blender until smooth. With blender running, add 1 c oil in slow and steady stream. Process until smooth. Add 1/4 c toasted sesame seeds (@ 325 for 15 minutes) and 2T poppy seeds. Chill 24 hours. It's pretty tasty, especially when served on top of a salad that involved pralined almonds (sliced almonds and sugar in a 2:1 ratio tossed in frying pan until delicious). Not pictured: blanch spinach, toss with butter and lemon juice, and slivered garlic. Over that, put a seared chicken breasted, topped with a pan sauce consisting of pan fond deglazed with white wine, chopped scallions, sour cherries, a hint of balsamic vinager and a sprinking of basil chiffonade. Delicious!

Version 2.0 of Basil Lemonade: Pulse basil and a little mint with lemon juice and simple syrup (mine was the leftover basil simple syrup so this is a little browner than it should be) in a food processor. Pour in a glass and top with seltzer water. Garnish with delicious, candy-like heirloom cherry tomatos if whimsical. In the future, I will probably run the basil puree through a rough strainer so as not to get that odd basil scum due to the seltzer bubbles, and use regular simple syrup to maintain the brilliant green. Also, this is a strong contender for Crim Dell part 2. It's fabulously delicious. Alternately, I may drizzle a little grenadine in the bottom and do a tequila sunrise sort of thing.

Man this summer has flown by. I've got all sorts of travel hoohah to share, but by golly I have to pack for New York immediately post work. Soon, though, I'll get back to the plain-ol' work/intern/school stuff, but I'm also trying desperately to cram as much fun into the next few weeks as possible. *Note to self, how about EARNING money, not just SPENDING money this summer? Huh? Huh?
Also, peripherally related, does anyone here understand Advanced Stock Market-ese? I'm more or less conversant but then GM imploded and now I have... rights redemptions? And liquidation companies..? or something? I could use a pointer or two.
Anyway. Back to being a social parasite for a while, but thrilling tales are in the making, I promise! |

Going to France tomorrow for about 10 days. What fun! Definitely getting excited, but I'm gonna miss people. A little nervous about the flight but I think I'll be ok. Should be a good time! |
